In Africa the debate between Western individualism and African collectivism rages on. Some call for a return, in Africa, to the concept of ubuntu – a Bantu word that expresses the concept of the traditional African value of collectivism, of emphasising the communal good over individual desires and needs. Others say the belief in a golden era of African collectivism is exaggerated and that clinging to such economic concepts in the modern world is self-defeating.
